GPD 3: KVM Module

The GPD 3 Pocket KVM module works on Ubuntu Linux with a VGA to HDMI converter.

The GPD Pocket 3 is becoming one of my favourite devices. For on the go I can take it everywhere and it’s light. It has a 1TB nvme, an i7 and 16GB of ram running Ubuntu. Everything just works.

This is a demo of the KVM module.

The KVM module is the one in the middle, and provides HDMI in and USB out.

To use it I got a Simplecom VGA to HDMI converter. Note: HDMI to VGA doesn’t work, it’s the wrong direction.
A USB-C Male to USB-A Male
Powered by the side USB-A port to Micro USB.

To stream the camera, I use VLC and select the capture card. The default Ubuntu camera utility didn’t seem to work.

I prefer VLC so I can record what I do when connected anyway, so can later make notes and reference changes.

When plugged in, the keyboard gets transferred to the KVM so you can no longer use it. However, the touch screen works, so you can get by with basic navigations.

very very cool. shame it wasnt vga out of the box (since thats pretty standard), but the converter isnt too clunky! whats the delay like on the video? could you potentially use this as a screen for game consoles?

For typing text in a Linux console I didn’t feel a noticeable delay. Scrolling text was readable too.

I don’t think you could game with it though, but will give it a try…

Yeah, I don’t think the target was network admins, and more for game consoles to connect into.
But this device is super light and packs up tight. Just need a shorter HDMI cable.
